I was born in Punjab in 1980, and I started training at fifteen. Not in a fitness club. In the kind of village gym where the equipment was rust, the floor was concrete, and the wisdom was passed down from older men who'd been lifting for as long as anyone could remember.
There was no protein powder. No pre-workout. No Instagram coach selling you a program. There was milk, real food, sport after school, and old men telling you to "eat what your grandmother cooks, lift what your body can carry, and don't be a fool."
I moved to the UK at twenty-three, in 2003, and spent nearly a decade working gym floors in a country that was colder and stranger than anything I'd known. Then, in 2012, I moved to Edmonton — and the first thing I did with my own money, before furniture, before a car, was sign the lease on a gym of my own.
By twenty-eight I was running the floor for someone else. By thirty-two I had my own place. By the time I was thirty-six I had four gyms across Alberta and a small chain of health stores that served men of every background.
I learned more about male physiology in those rooms than I have in any book. I watched a thousand variations of the same story walk in. A lean guy, late thirties, gets stuck. A soft-bellied man, mid-forties, can't recover. An engineer, 32, says he just doesn't feel like himself anymore.
Their wives noticed before they did. Their kids noticed before their wives did. And I — for two full decades — had no real answer for any of them.
What I'm going to tell you over the next four chapters is the part of the story I was too embarrassed to tell my clients while I was figuring it out — because I was their coach, and I was supposed to know.
